However, today, times are very different – bags are now designed with weight and waterproofing in mind, to make them as lightweight and sturdy as possible.

When you begin shopping for golf essentials, such as a golf bag, you will notice that there are a number of different types available in varying shapes and designs from a number of brands, such as Cobra golf bags or Galvin Green for example. But, first things first, you need to think about how many types of golf clubs you want to take with you onto the course, and how you would like transport your golf equipment from one hole to another, as this will determine which type of bag you should purchase. But, what are the different types on the market?

What are the different types of golf bag?

There are six different sorts of golf bag on the market, and each bag has different uses and varied features. These include:

  1. Tour bags
  2. Cart bags
  3. Stand bags
  4. Pencil bags
  5. Waterproof bags
  6. Travel bags

Which golf bag is right for you?

1. Tour bags

Of all the types of golf bag, tour bags (also known as staff bags) are the largest bag on the market, making them be considered as one of the best and the most luxurious of all. The bag has plenty of extra space for all belongings, alongside your golf clubs, such as extra clothing, waterproofs, gloves and golf balls, so it is no wonder that they are popular with professionals when on Tour – hence the name.

However, they are extremely heavy and weigh around 10 pounds, which may be an issue for the average golfer. Obviously, it isn't a concern for professionals as their bags are carried by a personal caddie, but if you are playing on your own it may be a problem and is often not recommended for golfers playing unaccompanied. Despite this, if the Tour bag is the right bag for you, consider pairing it with a push/pull or electric trolley, or even a golf buggy.

However, don't let the weight put you off completely. Even though they may weigh a lot, the bag more than makes up for it through its use of high quality materials, masses of storage space and style, so no wonder it's a hit with the pros!

2. Cart bags

Cart bags, also known as trolley bags, are specifically designed to be carried on a golf buggy or trolley, whether it be a push/pull cart or electric.

Cart bags are quite distinct, as they include a rubber or non-slip base that will keep the bag from sliding off the cart when moving. So,if you prefer to walk around the course and carry your golf bag, this option may not be best for you; it may be worth considering stand bags instead.

This golf bag is noticeably lighter and smaller than tour bags,at around six to 7 pounds, to allow easy mobility when placed on the trolley. Just like the tour bag, the cart bag also offers pockets – although on a smaller scale – for carrying waterproofs, valuables and balls, which are often situated on one side of the bag to offer easy access when positioned on a trolley.

3. Stand bags

A little more unique to the other types golf bags on the market, stand bags are significantly lighter (5 pounds or less) and feature two retractable legs to allow the bag to stand upright, preventing it from getting dirty. This clever trick allows easy access to any club whilst playing a round and means it stays upright on a variety of golf course terrains. Whereas, in comparison, trolley or tour bags are designed to be used on flat surfaces only – like on a golf buggy, trolley or a caddie's back.

(Don't worry, the legs retract and don't get in the way whilst carrying it)

Stand bags are a popular option for golfers that like to carry their bags and walk between holes. Most stand bags come with backpack-style shoulder straps that distribute the weight across both shoulders– we all know how heavy golf bags can be when carrying 14 different golf clubs! On some bags you can even add features, such as a hip pad to prevent any rubbing whilst travelling across the golf course.

4. Pencil bags

Pencil bags are another type of carry bag that has increasingly grown in popularity in recent years. These bags are extremely lightweight, thinner versions of a stand bag, but still offer up to a 6-inch diameter top and can hold up to 14 clubs easily.

They are very slimline in design, which makes this bag type easy to store in a locker or car. Therefore, it's the perfect bag for a game of golf on a warm, dry day as they are incredibly lightweight and easy to transport from hole to hole. However, beware if there are showers forecasted, as they offer very little protection in rain.

5.    Waterproof bags

Golfers are all too aware of how unpredictable Great British weather is can be. As a result, several golf brands are constantly improving bag technology to provide the best waterproof bags for playing golf in the rain. With the industry going from strength-to-strength, it maybe time to consider adding a waterproof golf bag to your collection, for those iffy weather days when you want to get onto the course.

Waterproof golf bags often tend to be lighter in weight than most ordinary golf bags, due to advancements in technology. Therefore, the use of innovative materials can mean more vibrant colours can be used – great if you're looking to be more stylish on the course.

If you are a keen golfer, it is likely that you go on golfing holidays or take your clubs away with you, so it is vital you package your golf equipment carefully, to ensure they make it through check-in to baggage reclaim all in one piece.

Golf travel bags and covers are used in conjunction with your golf bag to help protect your most prized possessions whilst travelling. Typical features include a padded top to protect clubs in transit, padded or reinforced handles for easier handling, and at least one extra external pocket for additional storage.

There are two types of travel bags: hard cased or soft cased. The hard case is solid on the outside and heavier than other travel bags you will find but will offer great protection. The soft travel bag will be padded and still offer great protection, but in a lightweight alternative.

According to the golfers of Twitter, these are the most popular golf bags:

To help you choose, when deciding between a hard or soft case travel bag, you must decide the bag's purpose. The hard bag is extremely rigid and will not fit easily into the back of many cars, but they are great for the less-than-gentle airline baggage handlers. The soft case is more suited towards storage and will be more 'hire-car friendly' than a hard case. It is also worth having a travel bag that has wheels, to make it easier to cart around an airport or hotel.
