The tiny boxes certainly resemble some of the nonprinting marks, but those would be black rather than blue in Word for Windows.

Yeah, your screen shot is clearly visible in the original post, but it didn't provide any clues that I could interpret...

Here is what I see in your sample document:

In other words, nothing looks strange on my system. So it is quite a mystery.

On your system, do you see the dots in the print preview at File > Print? Do the dots print and/or convert to PDF?

The small non-printing squares to the left of paragraph starts indicate that there is paragraph formatting managed by options in the Paragraph dialog's "Line and Page Breaks" tab. They are shown to alert you that one or more formatting options in effect may not be obvious: "Keep with next" and "Keep lines together" are the most typical, but the "Suppress line numbers" formatting exceptions option will also cause a square to display.

For Word on Windows, these squares are black; for Mac versions of Word, they are blue.

Click the ¶ button in Word's Home ribbon (or press Ctrl-Shift-8) to toggle visibility of the non-printing symbols.

Re having a rollover pop-up... While that would perhaps help, it could also be annoying if it kept popping up when you accidentally leave the mouse near a symbol. However, when you see something like this, right-click near it to display Word's context-sensitive options. They won't always be specific for what you see, but they usually include options to go to dialog boxes relevant to what was clicked. (In this case, the Paragraph dialog.)

Thanks for looking. They don't appear in print preview, nor do they print.

Thanks. Sorry, I'm not following follow your description of where the menu options are located within the Word toolbar or the document toolbar. I have searched through the various tabs and pulldown menus and have also used the help function but the only place I find 'Paragraph' is under Format in the Word tool bar at the top of the window and 'Paragraph' is greyed out even after highlighting text within the document. I also can't find 'Line and Page Breaks' tab.

Thanks. I clicked on 'Normal' but nothing changed. I then selected all of my text and clicked on 'Normal' but still no change. Worth a try I suppose. Thanks again.

Re Eric's suggestion

.

Select one or more of the paragraphs

Right click

Select Paragraph from the context menu

You already have 1 option selected.

Strangely enough, like Stephan I don't see the boxes until I select another, ie "keep with next"

Like Stefan, I see nothing like the marks you are seeing. I also reviewed the paragraph formatting and you have nothing that would trigger the black squares that would appear with the formatting mentioned by Eric.

Do these appear if you start Word in safe mode?

  • Home ribbon; touch the small down-right icon in the bottom right side of the Paragraph group. The Paragraph dialog has 2 tabs: Indents and Spacing, and Line and Page Breaks.

You can also access the dialog by right-clicking in a paragraph and choosing Paragraph.

Also, in Word for Windows, if you press Shift-F1 to display the Reveal Formatting Pane, any blue hyperlink names will open the relevant dialog. When any of the "Line and Page Breaks" options are in effect, that subhead will be hyperlinked and can be clicked to go directly to the tab in the Paragraph dialog. I'm not sure what the equivalent is for Mac Word.
